Making fish oil is easy and cheap. Making the high quality, ultra-pure pharmaceutical grade fish oil found in our Ocean blue® products is very difficult and costly.
High quality fish are required when making purified omega-3 fatty acids. However, not all fish are equal when it comes to their omega-3 fatty acid content. Some fish are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, just like some people are deficient in this essential fatty acid. Cold-water, oily fish, such as anchovies, salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines all have high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids. Species that have relatively low concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids include red snapper, tuna, catfish and mahi-mahi.
Ocean blue® products are developed through a method called molecular distillation. While molecular distillation is more complicated and expensive, the result is a highly-refined, ultra-purified oil that has a very high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. In this method, the crude oil is converted to an "ethyl ester" form, then the ethyl ester fatty acids are separated from contaminants in a vacuum system, which ensures temperatures are maintained below the oil's boiling point. Molecular weights are then used to isolate and concentrate the omega-3 ethyl ester fatty acids, leaving unwanted contaminants behind. The result is an oil that is nearly odorless and colorless, which has a higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids than many other available supplements.
Once the oil is purified and the waste products are removed, it is stored in steel barrels and blanketed with nitrogen gas. The containers are then kept in a cool warehouse until the oil is ready for encapsulation. During the entire production process, the oil is never exposed to the air or to light, as exposure to either could degrade the oil and create the unpleasant odor that is associated with most omega-3 and fish oil supplements.
At every stage of production, samples of the oil used to make Ocean blue® products are collected and laboratory tested. Every shipment of oil received at the SCI facility is tested by the laboratory to confirm purity, total omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA content and ratios. Every raw material that is used in Ocean blue® products is tested to meet quality standards. Various microbiological tests are also conducted on all Ocean blue® brand products to ensure that high quality standards are met. Once these tests are completed, the oil is encapsulated into soft gelatin capsules in FDA-registered facilities under nitrogen and protected from light and heat.
Finally, the finished softgels are packaged and sealed in air tight bottles and are readied for shipment.
